Parks Mechanic

Description: responsible for the skilled maintenance and repair of the Parks & Recreation Department’s tractors, turf equipment, mowers, small engines, trailers, and related implements. This position requires diagnostic ability, light welding and fabrication skills, and a demonstrated aptitude for mechanical work. The Mechanic ensures that all equipment is safe, reliable, and ready to support daily park maintenance, athletic field preparation, and snow removal operations. The position will also periodically be asked to assist with park-related infrastructure such as irrigation systems and facility components. Mandatory snow removal overtime.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on turf equipment, mowers, small engines, trailers, and related implements.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems using appropriate diagnostic tools.
  • Small scale welding, some fabrication, and modifies parts or attachments to repair equipment and keep it in service.
  • Performs field repairs during storm events, mowing operations, or emergencies.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs, parts inventory, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Orders and manages shop supplies and materials; maintains an orderly and safe shop environment.
  • Updates and maintains OSHA records and MDS sheets on all supplies and inventory.
  • Operates trucks, plows, loaders, and other equipment for snow removal and storm response.
  • Periodically assists with park-related infrastructure such as irrigation systems or facility components.
  • Collaborates with the Superintendent, Foreman, and field crews to support daily park and athletic field operations.
Other Job Functions:
  • Supports special projects and event preparation.
  • May do minor repair/maintenance of Parks Department trucks and snow equipment
  • May train or assist staff on safe use and care of equipment.
  • Must bring personal mechanical tools to site, others will be supplied by the Town
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a maintenance shop environment with frequent outdoor activity. Duties require standing, bending, climbing, sitting and working in confined spaces. Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, operate tools and equipment safely, and perform physical labor in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow. The position requires the ability to operate trucks, plows, loaders, and other mechanical equipment for extended periods, as well as basic computer use for recordkeeping and diagnostics.

Experience/Qualifications/Certifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent; completion of trade or vocational training in mechanics preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience performing maintenance and repair on turf equipment, mowers, small engines, trailers, and related implements.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and mechanical ability with a willingness to learn and grow technical skills.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, hand and power tools, and basic computer-based recordkeeping.
  • Welding and fabrication skills required.
  • Ability to operate trucks, plows, and other equipment during snow and storm events.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to work cooperatively with staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Must have or obtain CDL within 10 months of hire to maintain position
